Inspirational Story of Prem who Quit CA to pursue his dream to be a Director struggled his way through and finally got a break in TVF Qtiyapa.
“In the movie 3 Idiots, it was told – As soon as a child is born its drilled into him to be an Engineer! Similarly when you are in a commerce college (I was in RA Poddar) the best possible thing you can do is CA. So I did the same,” says Prem Mistry, Associate Creative Director at TVP Qtiyapa.
“However I knew from within being a CA was something which I would never enjoy. In midst of all this, I started bunking CA IPCC class and watching a lot of movies. I would watch a movie every other day. Suddenly I started watching movies in a different way, I was observing the many small things in filmmaking. This continued for a good one year. I think somewhere inside of me I was sure even if I clear CA I would never do anything related to it. However, I still continued pursuing CA as if not CA then what next was still unclear.
I told my parents CA is not for me, MOVIES is my calling and they supported my decision. So here starts my journey. Still, when I said ‘Movie Making’ and NOT CA it meant pursuing a ‘School’ which teaches direction! So I started researching about schools which teach direction.
Now my dad could get me into private filmmaking school by paying a few lakhs but I did not want him to do that. First of all, I left CA and then this field is also full of uncertainties! So I decided on joining a Govt School like Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute.
Success in Short Film:
By this time I also made my first short film which ended up being screened at MAMI and Asia Film Festival. I was sure now I would get so many opportunities in the film industry and life was going to be amazing! However, then reality struck. Nothing of that happened, I realized that struggle is the only way for me. If I want to do something, I have to slog my a** off. PERIOD.
So now every morning for 6 months – I used to stand outside big production houses Yash Raj, Balaji etc meeting people and telling them if there is anything please let me know. It was a struggle, just standing and telling them that I could ‘Direct’ well if given a chance.
One day I was going through Youtube and I stumbled across a TVF (THE VIRAL FEVER) video. I went to the site and they said they needed an intern. So I applied for the same and got selected. After 3 months of interning, I was doing the production design of a lot of TVFs content. During the same time, I got selected in Satyajit Ray film academy. I cleared everything and on the last selection round (out of 10,000 applicants 12 were shortlisted) I did not get through because of all the ‘Quota Systems’. I was very upset and hurt however there was nothing I could do about it so I moved on, got back to work and decided to WORK and LEARN!!!
Its been 4 years now at TVF and I have done a lot of interesting things from working on Pictures, Permanent Roommates, making funny sketches, music videos, more funny videos. etc. As of now, I am working on my first web series under TVF Originals, let’s see how that turns out. Read here to know more about him,” he concluded.
